How to get rid of all your stuff
If you’re planning on traveling long-term, you’re going to need to figure out what to do with all your belongings. Remember, you’re only carrying what can fit inside a backpack. And when you’re on the road, are you really going to need your collection of Stephen King and George R.R. Martin novels, your DVD collection of Judd Apatow movies or those 60-plus pairs of shoes in your closet?
I didn’t think so. More than likely these things are collecting dust in your apartment. I would recommend selling what you can and giving away the rest. Here’s what I used.
1. Craigslist
This is one of the easiest ways you can post your stuff online. It doesn’t cost any money, and if you want to give away furniture like I did, there’s a “Free” category. I was able to get rid of half of my media collection and nearly all my furniture through this Web site.
2. eBay
EBay is great if you realize that you have something of rare value. I ended up making a $20 profit off of a CD/DVD box set that I bought in 2000. Keep in mind that you’ll need to ship the item to the buyer. Make sure to factor that into your asking price.
3. Half.com
This is the college student’s dream to get rid of textbooks. I used it regularly when I was in college, but if you’re a few years out of school, your books are probably five or six editions behind. In that case, I would recommend Craigslist. However, don’t be discouraged. I was still able to sell a Research Methedology book for a decent price. Again, you’ll have to ship the items. Make sure to factor that into your price.
4. Goodwill (or any charity)
Before I moved out of my apartment, I cut my wardrobe in half. And I guarantee everything I gave away I hadn’t worn in years. I also found a few charities through work and Craigslist that were able to take my dishes and kitchen appliances off my hands.
5. Work your contacts
You have friends right? I’m sure they’ll be glad to take some of that stuff off your hands. Create a Facebook event that lists what you’re selling. Send a mass e-mail at work. Hold a garage/yard sale and let your neighbors know.
This is just a small list, but it is what I personally used to downsize before my move. If you have any suggestions, post comments below or send me an e-mail.
